The Minister of State for Microfinance and Small Enterprises Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo,, has defended the previous security presence at former Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu’s residence in Magere, Wakiso District, stating it was intended for his protection rather than to restrict him.
“Kyagulanyi is not an ordinary individual; he came second in the last election. There could be many people targeting him. His supporters should welcome the security measures in place,” Kasolo said during NBS Barometer.
The remarks follow the complete withdrawal of police and military personnel from Bobi Wine’s residence after a two-month deployment that had effectively made the property a restricted zone. Observers confirmed that the residence is now fully accessible, with no officers or roadblocks in place.
Government officials maintain that the deployment was a preventive measure aimed at safeguarding public order and Kyagulanyi’s safety, amid concerns over potential threats due to his political prominence.
Bobi Wine, who has been operating from undisclosed locations since January 16 following the disputed January 15 presidential election, recently left Uganda temporarily to engage internationally on electoral integrity and human rights concerns.
During his absence, he appointed Lina Zedriga Waru as acting president of the National Unity Platform.
Despite rejecting the election results declaring Yoweri Kaguta Museveni the winner, Kyagulanyi has ruled out legal action in court and instead advocates for peaceful demonstrations.
Government officials have repeatedly dismissed claims of political persecution, while some ministers have criticised his international outreach as ineffective for domestic political change.
